Historical Context: The Rise of the Bourgeoisie and Proletariat

We may sum up its final result in these few words, that the earth isperennially over-populated, whence poverty, misery, distress, and immoralitymust prevail; that it is the lot, the eternal destiny of mankind, to exist intoo great numbers, and therefore in diverse classes, of which some are rich,educated, and moral, and others more or less poor, distressed, ignorant, andimmoral. Fundamental Economic and Social Divisions

Any assumption of legitimate political power (government and rule) by the bourgeoisie represented a fascist loss of totalitarian state power for social control through political unity—one people, one nation, and one leader. In the 19th century, the bourgeoisie propounded liberalism, and gained political rights, religious rights, and civil liberties for themselves and the lower social classes; thus the bourgeoisie was a progressive philosophic and political force in Western societies. According to the Marxist view of history, during the 17th and 18th centuries, the bourgeoisie were the politically progressive social class who supported the principles of constitutional government and of natural right, against the Law of Privilege and the claims of rule by divine right that the nobles and prelates had autonomously exercised during the feudal order. Following this revolution, as the exploitation of labour is abolished and a classless society is established, the bourgeoisie would cease to exist. Proletarians literally have nothing to sell but their labor power. Because these workers have no property, they must find employment in order to survive and obtain an income. These individuals employed labor to create capital (Wolf & Resnick, 2013). They are the owners of capital and are able to acquire the means of creating goods and services, such as natural resources, or machinery.

But these wise Malthusians were so thoroughly convinced of the infallibilityof their theory that they did not for one moment hesitate to cast the poor intothe Procrustean bed of their economic notions and treat them with the mostrevolting cruelty. Underpresent social conditions it is perfectly clear that the poor man is compelledto be an egotist, and when he can choose, living equally well in either case,he prefers doing nothing to working. He demanded hisweekly relief as his right, not as a favour, and this became, at last, too muchfor the bourgeoisie. Since, however, the rich hold all the power, the proletarians must submit,if they will not good-temperedly perceive it for themselves, to have the lawactually declare them superfluous.. He quotes the wordsof a poet, that the poor man comes to the feast of Nature and finds no coverlaid for him, and adds that “she bids him begone”, for he did notbefore his birth ask of society whether or not he is welcome.

All theconditions of life are measured by money, and what brings no money is nonsense,unpractical, idealistic bosh. I once went into Manchester with such abourgeois, and spoke to him of the bad, unwholesome method of building, thefrightful condition of the working-peoples quarters, and asserted that I hadnever seen so ill-built a city. True, these English bourgeoisare good husbands and family men, and have all sorts of other private virtues,and appear, in ordinary intercourse, as decent and respectable as all otherbourgeois; even in business they are better to deal with than the Germans; theydo not higgle and haggle so much as our own pettifogging merchants; but howdoes this help matters? In thepresence of this avarice and lust of gain, it is not possible for a singlehuman sentiment or opinion to remain untainted.
